Umpire Jerry Meals ends Pirates-Braves marathon with horrible call

We’ve certainly seen a fair share of bad MLB umping in the last year or so. Who could forget the infamous Jim Joyce blown call in the perfect game attempt by the Tigers’ Armando Galarraga. Arguably, one of the worst decisions in the history of sports (how’s that for hyperbole).

Last night, Jerry Meals tried to one-up Joyce with this horrific call in the Pirates-Braves 19-inning marathon.

Video from SportsGrid:

Here’s what Meals had to say after the game.

“I saw the tag, but he looked like he oléd him and I called him safe for that,” Meals said. “I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area. I’m guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened, I didn’t see a tag.

“I just saw the glove sweep up. I didn’t see the glove hit his leg.”

Translation. It was two in the morning, I was tired, I wanted to go home. Sounds about right.
