Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer has decided to step down. He informed athletic director Jeremy Foley of his intentions over the weekend and there is a press conference to formally make the announcement today at 6pm.

“But after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I’ve been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been.”

In his six years with Florida, Urban Meyer posted a 64-15 record with 2 national championships. At 46-years old, he’s definitely considered extremely young for retirement and this may just end up being a one or two year absence away from the game as he recuperates. If you recall, last December, Meyer was admitted into a Gainesville hospital after suffering chest pains. A few weeks later amidst discussions with his family and friends, Meyer contemplated retirement and even made an announcement that he was leaving. However, one day later he instead took an indefinite leave of absence.

Meyer leaves as one of the most successful college football coaches in the modern era. He was named “Coach of the Decade” by SI and Sporting News and is widely respected by his peers.
