Utah coach Jim Boylen has fiery exchange with reporter

I normally side with the media in these “press conference gone bad” scenarios, but in this situation, I’m going to have agree with Utah coach Jim Boylen here.

The very first question asked of him:

“You started the second half missing your first 12 shots, explain how you were feeling during that run”

Now how the hell do you want him to answer that? “Like sh–” was the most appropriate response for such a dimwitted question. Hell, that reporter was lucky Bobby Knight wasn’t up at the podium or else he would have gotten one of these “game faces” in return.

It’s also pretty apparent that Boylen has a beef with one reporter in particular. That being Gordon Monson of the Salt Lake Tribune. It’s Monson that Boylen chastises at the end for only coming once every two years.

“I can ask the questions,” said Monson.

“Good,” said Boylen. “I’m not answering it. Don’t come here once every two years. I don’t want to hear that from you.”

Monson replied, “Coach, give me a break — show some class.”

Said Boylen, “Yeah, nice of you to show up.”

In Monson’s write-up for the game, he decided he would stick it to Boylen with this little pot shot

The Utes had no offense, no effective scheme, no answers, no chance. And BYU made them look all the sorrier.

After Utah lost, 71-51, Utah coach Ray Giacoletti, er, Jim Boylen had no real explanations, muttering that the Utes “could not get a shot to fall.”

The reference to Giacoletti is not lost here. He was the Utes coach prior to Boylen who produced two of the worst seasons in 20 years for the program. He resigned as a result.

Gordon Monson for what it’s worth has a radio show in the afternoons in Salt Lake City. Judging from the comments in the article, he may have more than a few angry Utes fans calling in.
