Effective January 2nd, Versus, a 24-hour sports station, will be rebranded as the NBC Sports Network. “This is more than just a name change for Versus, it’s a complete repositioning of the brand”, said NBC Sports president Mark Lazarus. It’s a big move for the network and a big move for Lazarus as he’s only a few months into his tenure as the head of NBC Sports.

The timing of the change coincides with the beginning of the NFL playoffs on January 7th. Moreover, the network rebranding will also include a change in graphics, a new logo, a larger Peacock and new fonts according to John Ourand of Sporting News.

Whether or not this is enough to make the network a true competitor to ESPN remains to be seen. But at the very least, they’re making use of the NBC brand, which to fans is more familiar than Versus.
