VIDEO: Francisco Liriano throws no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox
Francisco Liriano, on the verge of getting cut from the rotation, threw a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox last night. Liriano had struggled thus far this season going 1-4 with a 9.13 ERA going into the game. But the White Sox seemed baffled by his change-up, repeatedly swinging at pitches out of the strike zone. In fact, they failed to get a ball out of the infield for the last 4 innings. Their best shot, may have been what was ultimately the final out of the game on an Adam Dunn sinking line drive to short.
The no-hitter certainly wasn’t pretty as Liriano walked six batters on 123 pitches and his two strikeouts were the lowest in a no-hit attempt since Jerry Reuss in 1980. But don’t tell any of that to Liriano who was relieved to just get through despite looking tired late in the game.
“To be honest I was running out of gas,” he said. “I just thank my teammates that they made some great plays behind me tonight.”
“I can’t explain it. I feel so nervous and so happy right now,” Liriano said.
Indeed Mr. Liriano. It also helps that Jim Joyce wasn’t there to somehow steal it from you.
