VIDEO: Man tries to sell “illegal” 1973 Penn State Orange Bowl ring on “Pawn Stars”

A. Isaac Senior Editor

The Penn State Nittany Lions have one of the most storied histories in college football. In their 130 years, they have finished the season undefeated six times–five of them with legendary coach Joe Paterno. One of those seasons came in 1973 when they went 12-0 and defeated LSU in the Orange Bowl.

It’s that game which brings us to this episode of “Pawn Stars”–a show that focuses on interesting and unique items brought into the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. A man came in trying to sell a championship ring from that Orange Bowl which he says he bought from a reserve outside linebacker named Jeff Clark who lived down the hall from him. Let’s ignore for a second the NCAA sanctions that will surely rain down on the Nittany Lions in the near future (insert snickering laugh here) and instead focus on the problem with the ring.

As proprietor Richard Harrison points out, the ring is “strangely” missing its engravings and thus, buying the item would be illegal. Oops.

The man appears to know that the engraving was missing beforehand, so the news doesn’t necessarily come as a shock to him. He also assures them he never had any work done on it since his purchase.

So why would somebody remove the engravings on a ring? Who knows. Maybe some of our readers in the criminal underworld can fill us in.

Either way, before we assassinate the players of today for selling game-used pants and other memorabilia, know this–it’s been happening for a long, long time–even in programs and coaches with clean records like Joe Paterno.

What'd you think of this?
