VIDEO: Miss USA pageant features Miss California poorly talking about weed
The rumor going into last night’s Miss USA pageant was that the event organizers were soliciting more difficult questions in order to have a video or two go viral. Doesn’t look like that happened. But eventual winner Miss California Alyssa Campanella did discuss medical marijuana and find a way to offend stoners and people with any intellect in one swoop.
There is some outcry on pot-advocacy Web sites over her answer since Campanella is a born and bred Californian — the state closest to legalizing the drug in the country — and didn’t opt to say that the country should just legalize weed. Others are offended that she just said that medical marijuana should be used medically. I’m somewhere in the middle. Specifically, I believe that anyone who would have their political views influenced by something an admittedly-quite-sexy ginger says on a Miss USA telecast should probably be drawn and quartered anyway. So we’re not missing out.
Seems like a big opportunity lost for Campanella though. All reports indicate that she was far and away the favorite for the competition so why not go for broke and just say that maybe the country should legalize pot? She’d become a folk hero to millions of stoners across the country and everyone would be like, “Wow, how brave of this pretty girl to say something not even remotely controversial on an NBC event no one was watching.” Seems like a win-win.
