Rutgers and St. John’s played a hard fought game down to the buzzer this afternoon to determine who would move on to the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament. Unfortunately for all involved, the officials decided to mail it in early, literally not even paying attention to the end of the game.Rutgers and St. Johns 309x157 VIDEO: Rutgers, St. Johns game ends in controversy

Down two points with 4.9 seconds remaining, Rutgers desperately tried to heave the ball the length of the court. But St. John’s Justin Brownlee intercepted it and proceeded to travel, step out of bounds, and throw the ball into the crowd with 1.7 seconds left. Despite the obvious infractions, the whistle never blew and an angry protest from Rutgers head coach Mike Rice was all in vain as referee Jim Burr sprinted off the court into the tunnel.

It’s truly one of the worst officiated endings I’ve ever seen in the history of basketball. Yes, the hyperbole is warranted here, trust me.
