VIDEO: Urban Meyer confronts Orlando Sentinel reporter

For future reference, don’t you dare quote a Florida Gators player directly. Urban Meyer’s bound you to threaten you with fistacuffs.

That’s Orlando Sentinel writer Jeremy Fowler in the video and he’s guilty of the dastardly deed of quoting Gators WR Deonte Thompson about former quarterback Tim Tebow. Here is Thompson’s quote:

“You never know with Tim,” Thompson said. “You can bolt, you think he’s running but he’ll come up and pass it to you. You just have to be ready at all times. With Brantley, everything’s with rhythm, time. You know what I mean, a real quarterback.”

I’m still perplexed as to why this is a big deal. No receiver out there wants a quarterback who tucks and runs after 3 seconds in the pocket. They want a lead footed Dan Marino back there slinging them passes every down.

To Fowler’s credit, he has not backed down and issued a statement of sorts on his blog.

After Meyer made the comment about what he would do if Thompson was his son and told me to “be very careful,” he located his daughter, Nicki, who was 20 yards away. Seconds later, they both turned in our direction and Meyer pointed toward me.

This story is already out there, so I just figured I’d present my side. Coaches get mad, so they approach reporters about it. I get that. A reporter’s probably not doing his or her job without getting blasted once in awhile.

I will be at Friday’s practice, with questions ready.

Meyer trying to defend his guys is noble, but not at the cost of making himself look like a bully. If he wanted to address Fowler, he could have easily done it in his office or even over the phone. Sad state of affairs for Meyer’s stress level and certainly a situation he already regrets.
