Was the dunk contest rigged for Blake Griffin?

A. Isaac Senior Editor

Let’s get this out of the way right now, Blake Griffin is an amazing dunker and arguably the best in the game today. But the push for him on All-Star weekend to be crowned Slam Dunk champion seemed a tad overboard and as for the contest itself, it was a split amongst many fans/media if Griffin even deserved the crown.

Now news comes out that the outcome of the contest has been decided in advance. Strap on your tinfoil hats folks, this one is juicy.

From Ben Maller:

In this official media advisory it listed the “KROQ BLAKE GRIFFIN SHOWCASE” from 1:20 pm to 2:00 pm with the following description: “Five middle school students will showcase their dunking talents in front of 2011 NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest winner Blake Griffin.”

Nothing wrong with this right? Except for the fact that the release was sent via email at 5:28 pm PST on Saturday Feb. 19, over an hour before the Slam Dunk contest’s scheduled 6:30 pm PST start.

There’s also a screenshot from the NBA press release itself:

For a league that’s trying to step out of the shadow of the Tim Donaghy scandal, this isn’t exactly the best way to go about it. Maybe now, people will realize that the 1985 draft snafu with the bent card wasn’t just a coincidence.

What'd you think of this?
