We might actually see Pacquiao-Mayweather in our lifetime

After some verbal sparring that lasted months, the two biggest and arguably the most popular boxers in the world may finally be fighting. At issue was Olympic style drug testing that Manny Pacquiao’s team was not willing to agree to. But after the Mayweather-Mosley fight this past weekend, Pacquiao has said he is willing to compromise. He made this statement on his website.

“I am willing to help the sport for the future of the sport. I do not want to see anyone cheat or cheat this sport. For that reason I am willing to consider taking blood [tests] as close as 14 days prior to the fight, as long as my opponent does the same, and it is not a lot of blood, just enough to test,”

As a fan of boxing, this would be the first fight in awhile I would deem “must see”. Clottey vs. Pacquiao was uneventful and Mayweather v. Mosley outside of the 2nd round was awful.

Both Manny and Floyd have what it takes to beat the other on any given night. While I am firmly in the Pacquiao camp, I’m not naive about Mayweather’s frustrating defensive tactics. If Manny in turn let that get to him, well then, Floyd may actually exploit it using his counter-punch style.

Technical boxing aside, it would be an exciting match to watch. Something that hasn’t been the norm in boxing for quite some time.
