Wild ending in the Boise State-Nevada game

While most of you were sleeping last night (especially those on the East Coast), Boise State and Nevada traded counter-punches in one of the exciting finishes in college football this year.

I’ll try to set the scene for you.

Nevada staged a furious 2nd half comeback but still found themselves down a touchdown late in the 4th quarter. But the Wolfpack methodically marched down the field and with :13 seconds left, quarterback Colin Kaepernick found Rishard Matthews in the end zone to tie up the game.

Most expected overtime at that point, especially after Nevada squibbed the ball down the field. However, Boise State QB Kellen Moore and WR Titus Young had entirely different ideas. Moore inexplicably got behind the Nevada defense on a 53-yard Hail Mary throw and made a diving catch with :2 seconds left in regulation. Boise State’s season was saved! All they needed was a chip shot field goal and their BCS hopes were still in tact.

Or so everyone thought.

There was some question as to whether Kyle Brotzman’s field goal went in, but upon further review and some interesting super-imposed goal posts from ESPN, it drifted wide right by about a foot. That’s how close Boise State came to possibly playing for a National Championship. And now? Now, they’ll probably find themselves in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl playing a poor Pac-10 or ACC team.

Yea, as much as you want to feel sorry for Kyle Brotzman, realize that he probably cost the school several million dollars. Not exactly the most popular guy in Idaho right now.
