Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
It looks like Yao Ming’s days as an NBA player are over with. Sadly, the 7’6″ center has yet another injury and this one looks to be the one that finally pushes him to retire. An MRI revealed a stress fracture of the medial malleolus in his left ankle. Yao was limited to only 24 minutes this year and was already trying to heal from another injury when this was discovered. If he chooses to come back, it may be at least another year but there is a strong indication that he’s going to call it quits.
The NFL Players Association has filed a grievance on behalf of Redskins malcontent Albert Haynesworth. They will try to recover some of his $847k in lost salary. However, the case against Haynesworth is fairly strong as he openly admitted to not playing in certain packages and was not even on speaking terms with head coach Mike Shanahan.
In the winter race to see who can spend the most money in baseball, the Red Sox took another leap forward by signing former White Sox closer Bobby Jenks. The contract is reportedly for 2 years, $12-million dollars. Certainly not that steep of a price but considering how much Jenks struggled last year, it’s probably more than he deserves. His ERA, WHIP, and homeruns have all gone up steadily the last two years.
If Mike Singletary wants to keep his job, he may have to win out the rest of the season. The Chargers dealt the 49ers an embarrassing blow by defeating them 34-7 in Thursday night football action. Philip Rivers was nearly perfect and Vincent Jackson had a career game with 112 yards and 3 touchdowns. Surprisingly at 5-9, the 49ers are not out of the playoff discussion yet. If they can win their last two games, they could have a share of the NFC West crown.
