A college football coach in Texas is backing players accused of removing every copy of a student newspaper from racks around campus because of a front-page article about teammates being arrested on drug charges, according to a police report.

The incident happened at Division II Texas A&M-Commerce. The coach is Guy Morriss, who also coached at Kentucky and Baylor and played 15 seasons in the NFL with the Patriots and Eagles.

“I’m proud of my players for doing that,” Morriss said, according to an incident report. “This was the best team building exercise we have ever done.”

Since 1890, the Army-Navy football game has been an iconic rivalry game that provides bragging rights for the men in trenches or on boat decks around the world. It is one of the rare sporting events that transcend the arena in which it’s played. It is the essence of sport, and in 1963, it was played two weeks after the assassination of President John F. Even though their drunkenly fueled wedding was invalidated after 10 days, this couple had one of the crazier 6 month flings ever. They were once arrested in Miami for a domestic spat after Rodman allegedly saw one of Electra’s ex’s on tv and commented harshly. This led to WWIII in their hotel room and causing security to show up. Later when Rodman was sleeping, Electra tried to stick an uncooked penne pasta shell up Rodman’s, uh, behind. Yeah, that actually happened. As recently as 2006, Rodman says that Electra called and said she still loved him.

I’d love you too if you fed me pasta, Carmen. As long as it’s in the correct orifice. Or if it’s angel hair.

David Justice & Halle Berry

How bad did it get between these two? Berry told Parade Magazine a few years back that she almost killed herself over Justice. Years after their divorce, Justice tried to seek alimony from Berry even though at the time he was making over 6 million a year.

Not only was he an average player but it seems he was a pretty average husband too.

Andre Rison & Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes

Their on again, off again relationship was highlighted by Lopes burning down Rison’s house in 1994. It didn’t help that Rison had multiple transgressions and Lopes repeatedly had stints in rehab. But that didn’t stop the two dating for almost 10 years.

Rison’s fetish for colorful pirates was never confirmed.

John Daly & Sherrie Daly

Did he hit her or did she hit him? In front of a crowded restaurant in June 2007, they verbally assaulted each other but later on that night is when things really heated up. Daly claimed that Sherrie pulled a steak knife out and tried to stab him. He showed up at a tournament a few days later with cuts and scrapes on his face (Apparently, it wasn’t from poor driving like Mr. Woods wink wink).

Sherrie later pleaded guilty to federal drug charges and served 5 months in jail. Being that this was his 4th wife, we’re going to go out on a limb and say Daly’s fitness to make these kinds of decisions was about as strong as his fitness to do, well, pretty much anything physical not involving the words “pie” and “contest.”

Anna Benson & Kris Benson

Even though this couple is still together, they’re not without their fair share of controversy. Not only has Anna filed for divorced and retracted but she once issued this infamous quote about her husband to Howard Stern:

“I told him [Kris] — because that’s the biggest thing in athletics, they cheat all the time — I told him, cheat on me all you want. If you get caught, I’m going to screw everybody on your entire team — coaches, trainers, players. I would do everybody on his whole team.”

“Mike Piazza just did a back flip,” Stern said. “Even the coaches? What about, like, the bat boys?”

“I’m lining them up,” Anna said, “I’ll (also) circle into other teams. Whatever team he’s playing, I will screw all them, too.”

Don’t know if she ever went through with it, but my application for bat boy is still in the works just in case.

Chuck Finley & Tawny Kitaen

Drug user…check
Suicidal…check
Spousal Abuser…check

And no, I’m not talking about Chuck Finley. His ex-wife Tawny might take the gold medal at the Crazy Beeyotch Olympics. Their relationship was filled with arrests, rehabs, and restraining orders. The couple’s nanny once issued a statement that she was often asked by her two daughters, “”Is Mommy whacked out again today?”

You stay classy Tawny. Though your contributions to 1980s hair bands will never be forgotten nor diminished.

Mike Tyson & Robin Givens

Things were pretty rocky with these two well before they showed up for their 20/20 interview in 1988. Givens had accused Tyson of violence and overall mental instability. But it came to a head on the show when she said that he was manic depressive. Tyson didn’t respond but looked visibly angry. Givens went on to say that being with Tyson was “torture, pure hell, worse than anything I could possibly imagine”. A month later they divorced but not before they got their pot shots in. Givens told everyone she had a miscarriage but Tyson denied she was even pregnant to begin with.

Considering Tyson bit a man’s ear off and told a boxer that he would “eat his children,” I’m going to go ahead and side with Givens here.

Jason Kidd & Joumana Kidd

It might be one thing for a person in a relationship to be an abuser. But both? That makes for a pretty messed up lifestyle. Joumana accused Jason of being a serial abuser and adulterer while Kidd cited extreme cruelty. Either way, Joumana once ended up with a broken rib and damaged hearing when he allegedly smashed her head into the console of their family car. As far as Jason’s list of transgressions is concerned, well, it’s quite impressive according to Joumana.

There is a lot to be thankful for in today’s sports landscape. LeBron James may be the most physically gifted basketball player that the sport has ever seen. Stephen Strasburg can supposedly throw a baseball 103 mph. You can watch ALL of the NFL games at the same time with the Sunday Ticket! I think they still play hockey some places…Brett Favre won’t stop retiring! OK, scratch that last one, but as far as sports are concerned–we are living in a golden age of high definition awesomeness. We have gigantic televisions, cold beer, spirited rivalries and more than a handful of athletes who make sports fun to watch again.

Then you have teams who depress you when you’re watching the morning SportsCenter highlights. Like these teams:

Charlotte Bobcats

Michael Jordan had unparalleled achievements on the basketball court. He has done the same thing in the management seat. Like drafting Adam Morrison 3rd overall in the 2006 Draft. Signing any swingman shooting guard provided he has had questionable work ethic and attitude issues with former teams. Drafting every flash in the pan player that has come out of UNC for the last decade. Watching Emeka Okafor keep treading in a pool of mediocrity. I imagine it’s not easy to unseat MJ in anything, but someone is going to have to in order to make this team watchable again.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Are they looking into other head coaches? Will Jimmy Clausen ever live up to his hype? Is Charlie Weis on the hot seat? Is Charlie Weis roasting chickens and eating them whole with that hot seat? Can anyone decipher the sounds coming out of Lou Holtz’s mouth? What is Touchdown Jesus wearing to the game today? Nobody cares except people who graduated from Notre Dame and ESPN! And Brett Favre didn’t even graduate from ND! Stop trying to sell this team as a powerhouse. Or please just keep it off the front pages of every sports site not located within 150 miles of South Bend.

New York Yankees

Sure, they have Jeter and everyone respects him. He plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played. Jeter just seems to hustle just a little bit harder. He seems to play for the love of the game. And then there is the rest of the team who play for the love of the contract. Over $200,000,000 in contracts for the season–most of whom were poached from MVP ballots and overpaid to come play for the team with the most MLB mystique. And the most money. Come put on our green stripes and roll around in our new money pit! Meet Scrooge McDuck in person! Win Championships by watching George Steinbrenner make it rain at the winter meetings! Do you hear us Aroldis Chapman? Get your head out of Cuba and your ass to New York. We’ll be waiting with open checkbooks…

Detroit Lions

The Lions are just too bad to actually hate. Nobody has really loved the team since Barry Sanders prematurely retired after the 1998 season. Since that year, the Lions have wandered aimlessly through the jungle of the NFL season, where their fearless (brainless and former) leader Matt Millen would march them out onto the field to be eaten alive by the other animals. If the NFL were a zoo, the Lions would have been put down the day after Sanders retired. And the worst part is that every Thanksgiving Day, I have to turn on the TV and watch whatever band of crappy receivers (note: not Calvin Johnson) they drafted this year suck for 3 hours. It ruins my day. And probably yours. And definitely everyone that lives in Detroit’s.

San Diego Padres

Last year they traded a perennial Cy Young contender Jake Peavy to the White Sox, pulled a contract offer to their most beloved player and all-time save leader Trevor Hoffman, and eventually they will trade Adrian Gonzalez (arguably the best hitting 1st baseman in the National League) to the highest bidder sometime this season. They finished 21 games out of 1st place and watched PETCO devour any signs of offense the team had left. If there is one thing baseball fans hate more than watching a boring offensive team, it’s a boring offensive team that will sell all its most talented players to the Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox and Angels.

Los Angeles Clippers

If there was ever a team that could use a “life coach,” it would be the LA Clippers. The Clippers haven’t made a good personnel decision, well, ever. Along with that, they have suffered some terribly weird and unfortunate injuries throughout the years which leaves some basketball fans to feel the team is cursed. Only three players that have played for them have made the Hall-of-Fame. Their 1st overall draft picks like Danny Manning and Michael Olowokandi have gone from hero-to-zero in no time at all. And the players they draft who don’t bust end up getting traded to other teams for pennies on the dollar and then a good portion of those go on to be key players on play-off teams. And when a can’t miss player like Blake Griffin comes along this year…he breaks his kneecap in half before the season even starts. A franchise who’s history sometimes reads like a Greek tragedy holds no place in my heart and apparently no place in the NBA play-offs, as well.

Pittsburgh Pirates

If I were on the Jolly Roger, I’d set it ablaze and slowly sink into the abyss of Davey Jones’ Locker. At least that people might pay to watch that… It both angers and depresses people to watch the Pirate’s every year. I’m not sure they’ll ever make the play-offs again. That statement sounds harsh, but throw me an realistic number of years till these guys win the NL East. See? It’s just not happening.

I probably should have posted this yesterday since the CMA’s actually took place on Wednesday, but since it was, you know, the CMA’s I didn’t really see the urgency. Anyhoo, they happened and as the title states many babes were there. The guest list included (in order below) the newly single! Julianne Hough, Patricia Heaton, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Nicole Kidman, LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride, Nancy O’Dell, Faith Hill, Kellie Pickler, Kimberly Williams Paisley, and Michelle Branch. A decent list, made great by Julianne Hough, but now you see why I was in no hurry to do this post.

Every single year Hollywood releases approximately one thousand new sports movies that all look exactly the same. They change up the sport, they change up the cast, they even change up the wacky obstacle the team will have to overcome, yet the story remains exactly the same. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from these cliche sports movies (besides the most obvious one that the all-white team will never win) that you can apply to your everyday life. So whether you’re the new coach in a small backwards southern town or you’re in charge of organizing the relay races at the company picnic, take note of the following life lessons.

2. Be different

Stop trying to fit in with everyone else and embrace your uniqueness. Do you own a quirky car that would rather race instead of just drive you around? Great! Are you a dog with an uncanny ability to play sports? Even better! Anyone who has seen the plethora of Airbuds know this. Buddy proved to all of us that just because golden retrievers are supposed to roll over and play dead, doesn’t mean they should let their soccer, basketball,football, beach volleyball and rugby skills go to waste. And The Rookie showed us once and for all that there is a place for aging teachers in the major leagues – if and only if they look like Dennis Quaid.

3. Girls can do everything boys can do

Turns out girls can not only leave the kitchen to go to work and wears pants in public, but they can also play sports just as well as boys can. Sure they might have to dress like a man in order to make the team, but in the end everyone realizes that their press-on nails and long hair won’t actually make the team lose the game. No one actually believed a woman could hold a bat in her hands and hit a ball until League of Their Own showed us how it’s done. They not only just play, but they can also coach! Professional lip-grower Meg Ryan taught us two powerful lessons in Against the Ropes, not only can women coach male boxers, but Meg Ryan herself can be cast in a movie that isn’t described as a romantic comedy.

4. Pep talks make all the difference

No one who has ever sat through half-time in the locker room of a losing team without listening to a passion-driven speech chock-full of cliches . I don’t think anyone has ever heard the coach’s speech in Miracle and not wanted to tattoo an American flag across their chest. Nor has anyone ever seen Friday Night Lights and not had the urge to jump out of their seats and join a Texas football team. So always remember the game isn’t over until it’s over because while the other team may have better players with more skills and an undefeated record, you have the heart and are willing to give 110% until the final whistle is blown.

5. Being inclusive is good

Not even the cruelest person in the world can walk away from a race-related sports moving without wanting to start their own ragtag team of misfits, minorities, and rejects. Remember the Titans taught everyone that racist threats are no match for a on-field song and dance performance. And now ancient film Bad News Bears inspired every awkward kid out there that the bench isn’t the only position for them on the team. Everyone knows that the football team with six scrawny kids, three goths, two girls, and one cripple will beat the undefeated team in the final seconds of the championship game. Duh.

6. Magic is all around us

There’s no place more magical and mysterious than a sports field. Just ask Kevin Costner who heard voices telling him to build a baseball field in his corn crops and then watched as dead players began to play baseball. Or if you’re more into celestial magic refer to Angels in the Outfield where all it took was a young boy’s prayers to bring angels to earth. But perhaps the most magical of all is the The Legend of Bagger Vance in which a golf pro appears just when he’s needed most. Who wouldn’t trust a well-dressed stranger who gives inspirational speeches in the woods (assuming he can pass a background check)?

7. If you win against all odds, Hollywood will call

If you’re reading this post and thinking to yourself that it kinda sounds like your autobiography then grab your phone and find an agent. Hollywood loves true stories because it means they can keep making the same sports movies over and over again — but keep calling them original because it starts by saying based on true events. Sandra Bullock’s performance in The Blind Side would have been called cheesier than Miss Congeniality 3 if it wasn’t based on a true story. It’s hard to even imagine a movie about a swim team even making it to theaters, but throw in the fact that it’s a true story and you’ve got Pride. So if you’re running a little low on cash, gather up a neighborhood team of freaks and geeks, coach them until they win the state championship in ultimate frisbee, and then wait for the phone to ring.

No idea what the Hollywood Hero Awards are but now that I have seen that babes like Ashley Judd, Molly Sims, Mandy Moore, Eva Amurri, and Debra Messing thought enough of the event to attend I am going to have to find out more. Hmmm… turns out that Ashley Judd won the Hollywood Hero award, given by USA Today, at this shindig.

The USA TODAY Hollywood Hero Award is presented annually to an entertainment industry humanitarian who has made remarkable contributions of time and energies with non-profit organizations dedicated to enriching the quality of life for others.

Whatever… she’s hot. She should win awards…
