Nokia Public Transport: An app to help you navigate the bus system

Public Transport London 309x174 Nokia Public Transport: An app to help you navigate the bus systemIf you don’t own a car in a city, or driving around a city is difficult, public transit can be simultaneously a godsend and a nightmare. For example, I live in Boston, a city with lots of narrow roads in a state that will issue a driver’s license to any idiot who can pass the test, which apparently involves breathing and not taking a dump on the DMV floor while in front of a clerk. It’s like living inside a game of “Twisted Metal”. So I take public transit.

Unfortunately, public transit in Boston is complex and about as reliable as a Yugo. So apps like Nokia’s Public Transport are a godsend for the godsend.

The app simply stores the transit maps and timetables on your phone, so they’re always there and always accessible. It uses that information to put together “turn-by-turn” directions: what bus to take, where to pick it up, what subway to take and in which direction, and so on.

Even better, plans are in the works to have the app sync up with GPS tracking and train tracking systems in the local area, so you’ll know exactly how long you have to wait for a bus or train.

No, it can’t do anything about the creepy homeless guy. It’s currently only available for the Symbian OS, but a Windows Phone version is in the works.
