Square Card Case: run a tab with anybody, pay just by saying your name
We’ve all wanted to do it: walk into a store, pick some stuff up, tell the cashier our name, and walk out. OK, so it’s a fantasy that we’re huge celebrities and just get stuff for free. But Square, a company that wants to get everyone to accept a credit card, is making it just a little more possible.
The Card Case works like this: you enter your credit card information online with Square, and download the Card Case app on your smartphone. The app constantly tracks what merchants within 100 yards of you accept the Card Case using GPS, and gives you a constantly updated list on the app itself. So, if you want to grab a coffee on your way to work, you pull out the app, drop in at the coffee place, tell them your name and walk out with your joe. The merchant automatically charges it to your credit card, and everybody gets out the door more effectively. No word on what happens if they mishear your name, but we’re assuming “Sweet! Free coffee!”
Of course, it all depends on your merchant list: obviously this is more popular right now in major techie centers than it is in the Middle of Nowhere, Iowa. But, if you want to impress a date, or just want to cut a minute out of your daily routine, it’s a great app to have.
