Buy a netbook from T-Mobile, get free data… seriously

Dan Seitz Contributing Writer, Tech

If there’s one thing that drives me crazy, it’s the insistence of cellular companies and cable monopolies that data is like oil, or cupcakes, or beer: Something that must be lovingly manufactured and carefully protected lest we run out of it.

While there are technical reasons to be concerned about data use, this is all about being cheap and squeezing you for as much money as possible. Unless, apparently, you’re T-Mobile.

T-Mobile has a new program called 4G Connect. Buy a product such as a tablet or a netbook from T-Mobile, and you get 4G data completely free.

So the products are marked up, right? Nope. I did some checking and while you’re not going to get a crazy deal, the prices are roughly the same as picking up the items in other stores.

The catch is really that it’s basic data service: You will not be streaming Netflix. But if you need a computer for light websurfing and checking email, it’ll do, and of course you can pick up more data if you want it.

It may not be much, but hey, it’s a start.
