Crappy WiFi signal? Try a…baking tray?
There are some solutions to problems that are elegant, simple, and clever. And then there are the ones that turn what you’ve got into the solution to the problem. Recently, we came across an absolutely hilarious method of boosting your WiFi that we had to try out. Finally, a use for that baking tray your ex dumped at your apartment!
The hack is actually pretty simple, as explained by tech writer Peter Cochrane: put the top of your baking tray near your wifi antenna or cellular modem on your computer. Point towards the nearest source of WiFi. Refresh your window and see if you’re getting any more reception.
We know, we know, it sounds ridiculous, but we tested this out in Guyism’s lab (i.e. my apartment) and it works. In fact, it works really, really well: I was picking up WiFi networks from several blocks away, and they were actually usable, with two or three bars of reception. They even streamed Netflix; well, until I got busted and kicked off the network. Honestly, I’m forced to agree with Cochrane; this works a lot better than signal boosters that’ll run you $50 or more, and this was something I got at the supermarket for a buck.
In short, if you’re stuck somewhere with bad signal, don’t get angry: go shopping.
