Garmin wants you to use your GPS to track your jogging
Global Satellite Positioning started out with the noble goal of helping the military get around easily by launching clocks into space to help stop nukes (seriously, that’s how it started). Now it’s pretty much everywhere, because we as a species are absolutely incapable of reading a map. Or, apparently, be able to figure out a good jogging route.
Fortunately, Apple and Nike were there to help you. And now Garmin, the guys who made your dash GPS, want to get in on the action.
If you’ve used the Nike+ app for iPhone, this’ll feel familiar: you plug into sensors to track your heart rate and cadence, track your route, figure out how much time you’ve spent running, lets you figure out new routes, lay out checkpoints, share your workouts online to gloat to your friends about cracking a five minute mile, and all that other fun stuff. So, what are the main selling points?
Well, it’s on Android, you know, the other smartphone platform everybody loves, unlike Nike+. And it’s also a buck cheaper. Of course, the sensor Garmin wants to sell you, the ANT+, costs thirty bucks more than Nike’s, so we guess the savings aren’t really that much.
In short, joggers who don’t feel like buying Apple products now have an option from somebody who actually knows how to give you directions.
