Google’s new Nexus tablet leaks
This new Google Nexus tablet is pretty impressive for $200.
If you’re wondering why the price is so low, Google isn’t trying to pick a fight with Apple; it’s trying to pick a fight with Amazon. Amazon’s Kindle Fire is a popular Android tablet, but it’s also a walled garden: Amazon doesn’t want you doing anything that Amazon doesn’t approve of, which has been annoying Google.
Hence, the Google Nexus tablet, debuting this Wednesday and likely headed to a July release. And for two hundred bucks, it’s got a lot under the hood.
The tablet will feature a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, a 12-core GPU, and an NFC (near-field communication) chip. The rumored GPU makes us a little skeptical: that’s a lot of oomph to put behind a seven inch tablet. But the NFC chip will be absolutely standard with anything Google makes: it’s trying to put Google Wallet and Android Beam (an info-sharing service) on every phone in the land.
Between the Surface and this tablet, it looks like we’ve officially got a tablet war coming. We’ll be picking up the Nexus tablet when it’s released to give you a full review.
