OnLive brings PC games to iPad and Android
OnLive has been of interest to gamers for a while. Using the MicroConsole, instead of buying physical, disc-based games or downloading to a hard-drive, you buy the games, store them in a cloud, and just play them when you want. The problem, of course, was the fact that it was tied to your TV.
Well, until now. The OnLive app is hitting your iPad and Android tablet, and it looks good. Really good.
Engadget has a complete breakdown, but here are the salient points:
- The app, which is free, has full functionality with the games you buy: no special restrictions.
- The games play back on a full screen, so there won’t be any tiny windows for you to deal with, just the game itself.
- Games are seamless: that is, if you buy a game for your PC, you’ll be able to play it on your tablet without buying anything else or having to set up a special account.
- You’ve got your choice of controls; on-screen touchscreen controls, as hardcore iPad/Android gamers are used to, or an OnLive gamepad that syncs with the tablet wirelessly.
There are some drawbacks, though. OnLive as a game system is still pretty new, so it doesn’t necessarily have the huge collection of games that other systems will, although it’s got classics ranging from “Hitman: Blood Money” to “Deus Ex”, and many of the games it offers are available as a “PlayPack”; a $10 a month fee to access a good chunk of their library whenever you feel like it.
In short, for gamers on the go with a tablet, OnLive offers an awesome solution. Now to expand that range of games, guys…
