Oru: The kayak that folds up

Dan Seitz Contributing Writer, Tech

If you like to kayak, and you live in a city, your options are currently as follows: Rent a storage unit for your gear, or somehow find an apartment that you can store your kayak in. But if you like the joys of the outdoors but want to live somewhere that isn’t choked with rats, you might find the Oru to be a useful craft, since it folds to the size of a suitcase.

If you’re skeptical, I don’t blame you, but here’s the video to prove it:

As you can see, the tradeoff is that you’ll have to do a little strapping and clicking. But considering that most portable kayaks involve putting a waterproof skin on a frame, this is probably a more viable solution. It’s certainly a cheaper and easier one to use, and it’s a lot more space friendly.

Oru is working on getting these to market. Currently the only word is that it’ll be available “soon.” But on the bright side, the price isn’t bad for watercraft: $500 will get you a folding kayak of your very own.
