Porsche-designed Blackberry comes to us from 1995, and it’s as fugly as it sounds

We don’t often rail about gadget design on here because honestly, nobody actually cares all that much, unless they’re worried about looking hip and with it, in which case, you really shouldn’t be a gadget blogger. What matters is that it’s functional and not absolutely hideous. We even liked the G-Shock phone we told you about yesterday. But every now and then there’s some sort of hideous failure in taste and design that even our Philistine tendencies realize is an affront to man and God.

The Porsche designed Blackberry P’9981 falls into that category. But why tell when you can show?

Behold, the Blackberry an exceptionally tacky and extremely rich person uses. No, owning this will not convince people you’re rich, just that you’re tacky.

Here’s what we’ve got to wonder. Research In Motion, a company that really is in freefall and might be dead before the year is out, wants to spice up their product line. They go to Porsche. OK. Porsche designs lots of electronics gear, not just cars.

So, when they come back with what looks like a tie-in product for Terminator 2, why didn’t you just thank them and not use it? We’re beer-swilling manly men who own power tools and don’t care about Pierre LaCrouton or whatever and we know this thing is ass. We know you’re Canadian, guys, but, really, there’s such a thing as too polite.
