WANT: Ralph Lauren RLX Solar-Powered Backpack

Ralph Lauren Solar Powered Backpack 288x214 WANT: Ralph Lauren RLX Solar Powered BackpackWhen I first noticed that Ralph Lauren was selling a solar-powered backpack (the RLX you see to the right), I thought to myself, “GOD. I am so sick of environmental hipsters making this stuff that’s unnecessary.” And then it occurred to me why one would want a solar-powered backpack: to charge stuff all the time.

And that’s all kinds of awesome. Which is probably why the RLX Solar-Powered Backpack costs a whopping $795.

Yes, this is as expensive as hell, but it’s a solar-powered backpack — what were you expecting? If I offered you a hoverboard right now, would you want it to be $9.99? Exactly.

According to the backpack’s page on RL, with “proper sunlight orientation, the iPhone and other mobile phones can be charged in two to three hours.” This is courtesy of a “3.45 watt current [that is] generated, enabling charges to iPod Classic and mobile phone devices.”

The RLX features a solar panel on the backside, and then a couple of flaps to make you look a little less like a super dork.

It also has a set of straps that allow the carrier to make it look like a briefcase. This is really handy for the Patagonia laptop bags that I love, but I’m not so sure I’d feel comfortable trying to walk through an airport with the solar-powered bag in my hand.

Full-body probes just really aren’t my thing.
