Samsung releases $20 light bulb that lasts thirty years

Dan Seitz Contributing Writer, Tech

Light bulbs are kind of a pain in the ass, when you think about it. They burn out, you replace them, they burn out, you replace them…over and over and over again. How much time do we waste on…OK, you know what, it’s just a minor annoyance. But where there’s a minor annoyance, there’s an overengineered solution. Meet Samsung’s new LED light bulbs.

One of the A19 bulbs, which will fit in pretty much any standard light bulb socket, will set you back $20 and save you 75% on your energy bills. Over the lifespan of the bulb, expected to be 27 to 36 years or so, that saves you…well…a lot more than twenty bucks. In other words, the savings mean they pay for themselves.

Samsung also has other bulbs, designed to replace halogen lighting (think track lights), although those will run you up to $60.

The main question really is: do you want to spend $20 on a light bulb? Here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
- You’re helping the environment without being a showboating douche about it.
- You’re saving money.
- You won’t have to change a freaking light bulb for a while.

Cons:
- You’re spending twenty bucks on a light bulb.
- The woman you bring home may notice and think you’re a closet hippie.

Hmmmm. Those seem to balance each other out a little too well.
