Sigma DP1: Big sensor, tiny little living space
We know, having a point-and-shoot digital camera can be kind of a pain. How are you going to blow up the photo of your friend booting on the dance floor to banner size and drape it over his cubicle if your little camera only has a 16 megapixel resolution?
Fortunately, camera manufacturer Sigma feels your pain, and wants you to be able to take ridiculously sized photographs in a tiny little package. Hence, the Sigma DP1 and DP2.
Get your mind out of the gutter. Now that we’ve taken car of that, the DP1 and DP2 have an effective resolution of…46 megapixels. How do they pull that off? By layering three 15 megapixel sensors to fit more resolution into a smaller space.
Personally, we’re concerned about noise with a camera of that resolution: it’s not just the overall megapixels that leads to a great picture, but also the size of the pixels themselves. If these sensors have tiny pixels, mostly what you’ll have is a huge, incredibly “noisy”, image.
Then again, it does come with bragging rights, and it’s not like Sigma makes bad cameras or lenses. These powerful little buggers should be available later this year.
