Smart EV delayed until September: Sorry, dorkmobile fans
Dan Seitz There’s a lot to love about Smart cars. A tank of gas can last for weeks if you don’t drive long distances or that often. They’re surprisingly roomy and comfortable. And you will never, ever worry about parking of any form ever again: they’re so tiny you can wedge them into just about any space.
On the flipside, you will look like a complete tool. There’s a reason “Saints Row The Third” wanted you to blow up 50 of them for a trophy.
Still, it is kind of sad they’re delayed until September 2012.
Why? Unspecified battery issues. Unfortunately it’s nothing exciting: no batteries are blowing up. Instead it’s because of supply line problems. Which stinks because we kind of want this car.
If you can tolerate the shame of being seen in one, you will save a frickin’ fortune on gas. The current model pulls a whopping 87 mpg highway, better than any car short of the problematic Nissan Leaf, and the new model promises more power efficiency, meaning you save even more cash. That’s not a small thing when gas is four bucks a gallon and going up.
And, frankly, out of all the eco-conscious dorkmobiles, it has the nice mix of being affordable (it starts at $22,000) and the least ugly. If you’ve got to save on gas, you might as well minimize the ribbing you’ll get while doing it.
