Sony’s ridiculous 3D facemask now for sale in the UK
Hey, the models from all those Robert Palmer videos got a new gig! Good for them!
Anyway, 3DTV is an area that electronics companies just aren’t willing to give up on, even though people aren’t buying TVs lately, what with the terrible economy, and aren’t interested in 3D, what with the eyestrain and total lack of available content. Still, Sony’s decided to combine 3D with another tech idea that failed miserable, ridiculous video goggles. And only the Brits can get them.
The Sony Personal 3D Viewer, or as we like to call them “Stylin’ ’90s Goggles”, are actually pretty…er…well, actually, they’re kind of crappy, technologically speaking. They combine two OLED screens with 1280×720 resolution, which means two screens with a lower resolution than your cell phone, and float them .7 inches from your eye. Sony says this makes it look like you’re watching a 750 inch screen.
Oh, and they cost $1600. Not that you can get them, since they’re only available from Harrods, a luxury store in the UK.
So, let’s review: Sony wants us to spend money we could drop on a huge TV, even a 3D one, to buy goggles that look like, well, this:
In other words, for nearly two thousand dollars, you get the privilege of staring at two crappy screens that will give you eyestrain while, to the rest of the world, looking at you using these things, you will look like a complete and total dork, or possibly the ’90s idea of a time traveler.
Yeah, good luck with that.
