SwiftKey overhauls your Android keyboard

Dan Seitz Contributing Writer, Tech

The stock Android keyboard is pretty good: it’s sensitive, it’s good at suggesting common words, it’s easy to use on a touchscreen. But not everybody enjoys having a stock keyboard. Some of them want a keyboard that uses dozens of languages, that has customizable layouts, or they just want to be contrary. Which is where SwiftKey comes in.

Essentially, as you and other people type, it uses letter distribution, words you’ve previously typed, and other word data to guess what word you want to type. The idea is that you get maybe three letters in and SwiftKey has beaten you to it.

It sounds simple, but having tried it out, it’s actually pretty impressive. And then there are the options.

International road warrior who needs to write emails in Spanish, French, and Dong? OK, they don’t have Dong, but they do have thirty-five languages standard, and are adding more? Did you learn on something other than a QWERTY keyboard? They’ve got Dvorak and Colemak layouts, for masochists.

In short, it’s a keyboard replacement for your Android that’s actually useful. But we’re still waiting for Dong compatibility.
