This isn’t shocking news, because everyone knew it was coming at some point (we mentioned way back when the iPhone 4 was first added to Verizon’s network).

But thanks to the folks at Fierce Wireless who confirmed the news from a Verizon spokesperson, we now know that July 7 is the cutoff date. Per Fierce, pricing plans for data will go as follows: $30 for 2 GB, $50 for 5 GB or $80 for 10 GB, all with a $10/GB overage charge that’s assessed by the company.

(By comparison, I pay $30 a month for unlimited data on my AT&T line.)

And we also know that if folks want to keep such a data plan, they’ll need to be signing up for Verizon’s services quickly.

That’s because, unlike what we were led to believe several months ago, anyone who’s got an unlimited data plan will have that plan honored for at least the duration of said plan.

Which is to say, if you sign a 2-year contract on Thursday with Verizon and get an unlimited data plan, you’ll keep that unlimited data plan for the next two years.

You can also achieve this by upgrading your current phone plan — think: new iPhone 4! — and/or phone.

There’s no mention of whether or not the grandfathering of contracts will extend in perpetuity, but it seems unlikely that customers will be able to keep their unlimited data forever, particularly if they sign up tomorrow.
