Gears of War creator says haters have Wii U all wrong

What do you think of the Wii U thus far? Underwhelmed like everyone else? Well, Cliffy B, the man who gave us Unreal and Gears of War says fine, but you’ll get it anyway.

Cliff Bleszinski really digs the Wii U: “From what I’ve seen, it looks pretty cool. It seems like you can stream your game from your television directly to your [tablet] controller, so if you have irritable bowel syndrome, or a small bladder, you can still play it in the toilet. That’s great.” Indeed. I actually do much of my gaming on the bowl, come to think of it. Moving on: “But, you know, from what people are saying online, they’re like, ‘Oh, it’s just a Dreamcast, whatever.’ But it’s like, ‘Dude, what’s old is new sometimes.’”

Again, he has a point: as with pretty much everything out there, there’s really nothing new, just variations of older concepts, sometimes successful, sometimes not. A formula that Bleszinski illustrates further: “The Power Glove [back on NES] led to the Wii, right? The Virtual Boy led to the 3DS, right? A lot of these older technologies that you forget about are [the technological predecessors]. The Kinect is a sophisticated webcam, right? So I’m just dying to see it. It’s Nintendo. I’ll buy it. I know I’ll buy it. They’ll talk sh*t but they’ll buy it.”

His final points perhaps the most important ones: Nintendo perhaps doesn’t get enough credit it deserves. I won’t go as far to say that they’re responsible for EVERYTHING (some of tried arguing that iPhone owes a lot to the DS, but I think that’s stretching things), but let us not forget that despite everyone pointing and laughing at the Wii’s motion sensing control mechanisms upon its debut, like Sony and Microsoft, everyone is now embracing it… like Sony and Microsoft. Basically, Nintendo has always set the pace of what gaming should and could be.

But that might also be the reason for the irrational Nintendo hate. Aside from everyone naturally getting sick of whomever that’s number one for way too long, their idea of how gaming should be no longer gels with the rest of us. Though that might have something to do with the fact that we now have options; back when Nintendo was the only player in town, it was easier to digest their wacky ideas (that and they weren’t as wacky as they are now). Nintendo is truly in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t position.

Prediction? I think the Wii U will do well, since it’s Nintendo after-all. And many of the haters will end up sheepishly buying the damn thing as Cliffy B states. But I don’t think it’ll set the world on fire, and the best elements will be “shamelessly ripped off” by MS and Sony for their new things. As well as Apple… or at least, taking back the ideas that Nintendo “shamelessly ripped off” from them.
