E3 2011: everything Sony had to offer
After a very rough past couple of weeks, it was time to see what the Japanese mega giant had to say and show.
First off, much to many people’s surprise, not only did Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, directly address PSNgate head on and right out of the gate, but it was handled with much class and dignity. Dude said sorry and appeared to at least mean it…
Alright, enough of that nonsense, hopefully once and for all. Time to talk about the games! Like yet another God of War collection for the PS3. This time the portable games are getting a HD face-lift and all the trimmings…
As for something actually new, another Resistance 3 trailer was unveiled. Looks hawt (like that’s some big surprise)…
Guess whose back? Remember Sly Cooper? Yeah, I know, about time…
For whatever reason, the new Pixeljunk title didn’t make it into the presentation. Which is weird considering how it’s totally a Sony game. Anyhow, here’s footage of the game in action…
One of the new titles unveiled that turned plenty of heads was Dust 514. Details thus far are spares… is coming soon to both the PS3 and PSVita… and is a FPS that takes place in an MMO, EVE Online to be exact…
Speaking of, it’s official, the name PlayStation Vita that is. The new handheld was the primary focus of Sony’s presser and here’s a trailer detailing all the new hotness…
… Sorry, but I still think its too big and has way too many buttons AND touchscreens. Anyhow, comes out at the end of this year, and cost $250 for the baseline Wifi model, $300 for the wifi/3G version. And guess who’s handling the 3G part? AT&T. So basically, everyone in New York, San Fran, and wherever else that has crap iPhone reception, you’re screwed!
Oh, and in addition to the games shown above, it’s also been revealed that BioShock is coming to the handheld, as well as another Ridge Racer naturally! As for other news that doesn’t have accompanying video:
- One major deal that MS was proud to boast at their press event yesterday was all the exclusive content their multi-platform releases are getting, mostly Kinect support. Not to be outdone, Sony’s getting some exclusives as well: Battlefield 3 comes with Battlefield 1943, Need For Speed: The Run will have seven additional vehicles, and the SSX will have a Mt. Fuji level that’s based upon actual satellite photos.
- Oh, and NBA SK12 will have Move Support, as will BioShock Infinite. In the case of the latter, the original game will be included on the Blu-ray, though part one might also be included in the Xbox 360 release as well.
- Resistance 3 is also getting Move support, and for those who don’t have a set-up yet, there’s the Doomsday Edition. Includes the game, the Move wand, Move navigation controller, PlayStation Eye camera, and that piece of plastic where you put all the Move pieces in to make it feel like you’re handling an actual gun. All for $150.
- No significant chunk of footage for Uncharted 3 was shown, that I know of at least. But the date for the multiplayer beta was at least disclosed: June 28.
- The lead star of Infamous will be guest starring in Street Fighter X Tekken, a role that’s usually been reserved for the star of God of War. Sorry Kratos, you totally blew it my fraternizing with the enemy (aka Motal Kombat).
- Oh, and it was also announced that the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus collection will support 3D when it arrives this September. And speaking of which…
What you see is a PlayStation branded display, one that presents visuals in 3D, which proves how serious they are about the initiative. It’s 24 inches wide, which Sony claims is perfect for dorms and family rooms. Though for most man caves, doesn’t cut the mustard. It comes with 3D glasses (wasn’t specified how many), a six foot HDMI cable, and Resistance 3…. all for $500. Not a bad deal actually.
Finally, much like with the MS presser, am glad that Sony made no mention of PlayStation 4, again to preemptive strike against Nintendo. Plus, far more so than the Xbox 360, its clear that developers have barely scratched the surface of the PS3, as evidence of multiplatform releases FINALLY being on par. And thank God for that.
