Everything old is new again, especially on the PS3
The PlayStation 3 is once again where old games are born again, with a HD sheen. Though one could believe that Konam is going overboard.
High definition re-releases of older, PS2 software is hardly anything new; there’s been so many thus far that I’ve seriously lost track. Though the God of War Collection immediately comes to mind, as well as the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus revamps, which is running late but still on its way. Most of these serve to remind folks of the actual next chapter on the way and serves as a nice stopgap, plus the chance to make a few extra dollars on the side.
Well it would seem that development is taking longer on much anticipated fan favorites for Konami, or that they’re hard up for money, because just announced are not just one, two, or even three, but FOUR HD repackages…
First we have the Silent Hill HD collection, which takes both Silent Hill 2 (arguably the best) and Silent Hill 3 (which wasn’t so bad) and puts them together, with the graphics and audio optimized to take advantage of today’s technology. Sound okay to me. And given how relatively hard it is to track down the former, the package sounds even more attractive.
Second we have the Zone of the Enders HD collection, which reinvents both part 1 and 2 of the giant robot spectacular. This is perhaps the best news of the bunch, because part 3 is long overdue, so if this collection does well… plus given how hardly anyone touched the first two installments and now regret it… the stars might finally be lining up.
Third up is where things get kind “meh”: the Metal Gear Solid HD collection brings together parts 2, 3, and Peace Walker from the PSP. Sounds great on paper for sure, biven how Team Kojima work their asses off to ensure their games take full advantage of the platform… and all three definitely push their original hardware… to see them just simply updated for a new platform will be a disappointment to hardcore MGS nerds like myself. For those expecting MGS4-level graphics, forget about it.
For the sake of comparison, here’s what Peace Walker looks like on the PSP…
And here’s what it will look like on the PS3…
Certainly nice, but here’s what Metal Gear Solid 4, which is four years old btw, still looks like today…
It’s almost like, what’s the point? Okay, the convenience of playing Peace Walker on the big screen, but still. Would be nice if the visuals could match MGS4, especially since Peace Walker is technically part 5 (that’s what it was called during development), but that would require way too much time and resources, and they still have Metal Gear Solid: Rising to tend to. Hence why any other effort seems like a waste.
Though on a related note: MGS3 is also coming to the 3DS as most know, and the first official trailer has been unveiled…
At least this port makes more sense: there’s no need to revamp the visuals because the added 3D effects is the real star. Besides, one has to wonder if the 3DS can pump anything out greater than PS2-level visuals. Oh, and since I mentioned it at the top, here’s what the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD collection will look like…
