For those who could give a damn about ‘Battlefield’ or ‘Call of Duty’, there’s still ‘Zelda’

And for those who don’t wish to be identified as a blithering Nintendo fanboy, sorry, but five minutes with Skyward Sword and you won’t be able to help yourself.

To each their own, but I play video games to forget about the real world. I know some folks are into the idea of being in the midst of an ultra realized war zone that’s ripped from the headlines. But not so much for me, I don’t see a point. Give me some fantasyland instead, or a space opera, anything to make me forget how miserable everything is at the moment.

Actually, games set in the here and now can be totally awesome, provided that it still feels like, you know, a video game. Having to endure the same degree of minutia that plagues everyday life, now THAT’S retarded (to be fair, that’s less the fault of Call of Duty, but more Gran Turismo). Or, just give me kick ass storyline to follow.

Speaking of which, not helping is how I’m not the biggest fan of online soirees either. Again, I play games to forget about douchebags that I have to endure out on the streets, in the subways, and everywhere else. Dealing with them in what’s supposed to be my escape is a real buzz-kill. Sorry if I come off as a huge p*ssy.

Meanwhile, the new Zelda reminds me of why I got into video games in the first place. It’s everything I want: a whimsical tale of heroism that’s devoid of politics, heavy moral dilemma, or gruesomeness. You’re not some hardened GI who just saw his best friend blow up in front of his face, you’re just some elf kid in a green tunic.

And you just swing your sword or around, or knock down targets with a slingshot, with reckless abandon. No need for precise aiming, or carefully managing C4. But most importantly, some jerk-off isn’t reminding me of how crap my game skillz are. Yes, I realize that I now sound like a raging p*ssy. Whatever.

The following footage, the latest (and final/pre-launch) trailer for Skyward Sword has the following comment from the YouTube that pretty much sums it up the best…

“This game is not HD. This game doesn’t have voice-overs. This game does not rely on the convenience of a HDD. This game won’t output TruHD sound, nor will it provide DTS sound. This game won’t support multiplayer. This game doesn’t have achievements or trophies. And this game is going kick ass.”

… Truth be told, I didn’t paraphrase him to a tee, cuz he actually did come off as a blithering Nintendo fanboy (near the end), but the overall sentiment was sound. I think we’ve allowed ourselves to become distracted with smokes and mirrors when it comes to gaming, and have therefore forgotten why we bother in the first place. All right, enough yapping; here’s the trailer…

I mean, come on; how can anyone NOT get all excited after seeing that? Though, obviously, being a Zelda diehard certainly helps. And it also looks to be the one we’ve all been waiting for, on numerous levels. First comes word that Skyward Sword might be the most Nintendo has ever spent on developing a single game. It’s been in the works for five years now, which is perhaps the longest developmental cycle for any Zelda game.

Though another thing that has Nintendorks all hot and bothered is the notion that it might be the very first game in the series. As also noted in the past, we’re all obsessed with the Zelda timeline, so it’s yet another piece of the puzzle that will theoretically make everything else, like the events in every other Zelda game, make total sense.

But we all know what’ll really happen, and that’s how even more contradictions will be inserted in the equation, causing even more confusion and diatribe-filled YouTube videos. Which to me, is like angels singing. Anyhow, here’s the intro for the new game, which sets the stage…

Oh, and just because, here’s yet another timeline video, courtesy of the Angry Nintendo Nerd. And yes, it’s almost 20 minutes long…
