Hackers are now ruining Sony’s contests, supposedly
Remember that contest that was supposed to net folks a free Vita, and how it was looking to be a train wreck of sorts? Sadly, some folks have indeed eaten at Taco Bell for no damn good reason after-all.
Last we heard, folks who supposedly won Sony’s new handheld, on January 30 to be exact, got only the run around instead. There was some glimmer of hope for a time, that those winning codes may actually get something for, like they’re supposed to. But not after the latest report, courtesy of Destructoid:
We have learned that during a short period of time on January 30th, some people entering our Unlock the Box promotion erroneously received a message suggesting they had won a PlayStation Vita, pending verification… After a thorough investigation, and an additional review by the independent company administering the promotion, it was confirmed that these entrants viewed these messages as a result of others who attempted to gain illegal entry and defraud the system.
That’s fine. But it still doesn’t explain why people with legit numbers are being shafted. What does knuckleheads trying to “game the system” as Taco Bell claimed last time have to do with the aforementioned group? Who got the winner’s screen that day because of, you know, actually winning?
At any rate, a second chance drawing is scheduled on March 21, for those affected (and for those who still care). But yeah, Sony clearly can’t get a break, can it? First hackers go after the PlayStation Network, bringing the entire company down to its knees and costing everyone involved a couple million (at least).
And now they strike again, by going after a couple of kids who wanted to score a free Vita (which has a net worth of a few tens of thousands, if that). Yup, totally sounds like the same troublemakers and not a bunch of inept marketing types.
BTW, I know a few readers out there were affected as well, and are perhaps no longer interested in dealing with Taco Bell’s bs. And if so, one might be wondering if the system is worth just putting cold, hard case on the counter for. And I’ll have the answer to that, coming later this afternoon.
