Latest Xbox 360 firmware update might bust your system

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

With Sony generating the bulk of the “Christ, what a sh*t game company” headlines as of late, it’s easy to forget that MS is hardly anyone’s best friend. Well, time once again for some more swell news for those pointing and laughing at poor, suffering PS3 users.

redring2 Latest Xbox 360 firmware update might bust your system

As pretty much everyone knows, the Xbox 360 is a fragile machine that is prone to constant hardware issues. I personally know one guy who is on his ELEVENTH system, due to a never-ending barrage of red-rings and E47 error codes. So I’ve felt pretty lucky in that regards.

Hence why this latest news is so distressing; there’s a new, mandatory firmware update coming up, and apparently, it has the potential to reuin a few older Xboxes, rendering them unable to read retail discs.

The heart of the issue is a new anti-piracy measure that also supports a brand new disc format that’s exclusive it MS’s box, which allows for increased size capacity (since Sony’s Blu-ray offers far more space for content creators… as LA Noire’s single disc on the PS3 vs the three on the 360 demonstrated most recently). Apparently this update does not play well with certain disc drives. And as anyone in the know is aware of, there is literally 50 different minor yet distinct hardware configurations.

Thankfully, MS is aware of the issue and is prepared to give anyone a brand new, shiny Xbox 360 S with a 250GB hard drive. That’s cool I guess, though I personally hate the look of the new console and would rather just stick with the original model, thank you very much.

The update goes out to everyone, and will be deployed in multiple waves, starting tomorrow, till the end of this month.
