Nintendo’s next console: your rumor round-up
Even though evidence hinting towards a brand new home console from Nintendo is purely circumstantial and speculative at best, most (myself included) have the “come, but it’s GOTTA happen this year!” mindset. And the following is what people are saying will define the new hotness, at least this past week...
- First off, many are speculating that instead of waiting for E3, the next system will debut shortly beforehand. Which would make sense: wet everyone’s appetite in advance and use the show to wow everyone with “okay, you know about ABC already, but did you know about XYZ?” Since E3 this year is second week in June, that mean a little less than two months we’ll know the real deal?
- In addition to it being running games at HD resolution (it better damn will, otherwise folks will literally burn down Nintendo HQ), many are now stating that it will be more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360. Given that those systems are years old… not exactly the wildest assumption.
- Not much of a rumor, but I guess further “proof” that support/confidence in the Wii is winding down is how both Best Buy and Target have lowered the price of the system down to $170. It’s not $150 like many had expected, but that’s still scheduled for sometime in May (if it happens of course).
- Easily the most interesting morsels of info comes from a French site, whose sources were the first to present valid behind the scenes info regarding Sony’s PSP successor, the NGP. They state the console is codenamed “Project Cafe” (which sounds stupid enough to be true).
- They also claim the controller will be somewhat reminiscent of the Dreamcast’s; remember the little display inside that provided info that went along with the action on TV? But it’ll be much bigger, and of course be a touchscreen. There’s even going to be a camera… hence why it’s been called very iPad like, though it won’t be as powerful. Though it’ll also have motion-sensing functionality, which makes one believe that the new console might be backwards compatible with the Wii.
- There’s also this line, via Destructoid: “The functionality of the Wii’s sensor bar has now been integrated into the controller, which would mean that you’d just use your controller as a sensor bar for Wiimote gameplay.” So does that mean to play Wii games, you’ll be pointing your Wiimote at the Project Cafe controller that’s synced to the system? I’m assuming the final thing won’t be a cumbersome.
- Destructoid goes on to claim that it’ll be close the architecture of the 360, allowing for easy porting, though there’s tons of additional benefits as well (like it’ll be easier to make games for, since everyone will be somewhat used to the routine, and anything to help devs out the better). Also, how it might use Blu-ray, which sounds like a load of a b.s. to me. There’s no way in hell that Nintendo would have anything to do with Sony’s format.
Anyhow, if more interesting tidbits come down the pipeline, we’ll let you know!
