PSN users have once again been hacked
Not long after filing my last post, about how Xbox 360 users have yet another hardware failure woe on their hands and that they shouldn’t just point and laugh at PS3 users… guess what? Commence further pointing and laughing.
Get this: the brand new measures that Sony has employed to ensure the personal information of their PSN users is protected, which if I’m not mistaken was the result of consulting all sorts of security experts and lengthy testing, has been compromised. WTF Sony.
The heart of the matter is an exploit that allows hackers to change your password, provided if they know your PSN account email address and birthday. Not only was this info stolen during the initial hack, but if one really wants to, that information can be somewhat easily traceable if a gamer uses the same handle and same email elsewhere. Which is often the case, like on message boards for example, where one also provides their birth date (usually for the oh so innocent happy birthday email that some boards like to send out).
Apparently, one can still log into PSN via one’s consoles (I just checked and my PS3 connected just fine), but access to PlayStation.com and the PlayStation forums is a no go.
So what’s Sony’s solution to all of this? “I would suggest that you secure your accounts now by creating a completely new email that you will not use ANYWHERE ELSE, and switching your PSN account to use this new email.”
Ugh, seriously? So that previous statement, about the PSN Store being back online by the end of this month? Yeah… don’t bet on it.
