So honestly, what are the chances of Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat?
Not very likely sez one of the Street Fighter’s head honchos. But at least it’s been something considered at an official level. And never say never, especially when it comes to video game pairings.
In a recent PlayStation Blog post, SF producer Yoshinori Ono addressed some questions, including the idea of game featuring a face off against MK…
“I actually get a lot of requests for Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat on my Twitter feed and elsewhere. I understand why people want it, but it’s easier said than done. Having Chun Li getting her spine ripped out, or Ryu’s head bouncing off the floor….it doesn’t necessarily match.
But I’ve had a couple of dream projects in my head for a while, one being Street Fighter X Tekken, which is actually coming true. Another would be a Marvel vs DC game which would be pretty damned cool if we could ever pull it off. I’m a big comic-book fan.
Now if I can get the presidents of those two companies in the same room shaking hands, then we could get something started. I’d love to see that just as a fan!”
… Interesting to hear that he’s into a Marvel vs DC game! Funny enough, the chances of that happening, on a legal level, are just as good as Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat, since Warner Bros handles both DC and MK.
But back to the subject at hand: one of the main reasons why MK vs DC failed was because it was an awkward pairing, or so that’s the agreed upon belief. They had to really tone down the fatalities, since a few folks really objected to the idea of seeing Cat Woman getting her spine ripped out.
Perhaps some might recall the controversy with the Joker’s fatality? This is what it was originally…
And this what they ended up changing it to…
But you know what the REAL problem with the game was? It sucked, that’s what. The game just didn’t feel right, with way too many distracting bells and whistles as it came to gameplay. Hence why the new MK rocks; it’s nice and focused. So if the same mindset was applied towards something starring the World Warriors, it would work, even if the fatalities were toned down. In the end, the gory finishing moves is a big part of Mortal Kombat, but ultimately not the most important part: it has to play well, above all else.
Ultimately, the ball is Capcom’s court (at least I believe that’s still the case). I remember, when talking to folks on Mortal Kombat’s side, when the DC game was being promoted, about the idea of a versus against Street Fighter. And they seemed totally into it! But Capcom wasn’t interested at the time. Yet that was then… at a time when MK’s stock was low… and this is now, in which MK has been able to successfully rebuild itself, who knows?
But till then, all we have is this fan made creation that’s been around for a good whiles now; was like seriously one of the first YouTube clips that I emailed to a pal and went “Check this out!” Man, 2006…
Meanwhile, to herald the arrival of the Fredd Krueger DLC, there’s yet another compatibility pack being released, this time with two more skins for everyone’s favorite, Sub-Zero.
Now you can have him look like he did in MK3, sans mask (though this new one looks far less random white guy than before, which is a mixed blessing to say the least), and a retro version (a la old school Cyrax and Sektor) of his cyber ninja self…
