VIDEO: Despite some classy names being attached to ‘The Tester’, it’s the same old crap

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

At the very least, it’ll be interesting to see the look of horror and contempt on the face of Nathan Drake’s voice actor as he watches someone demean themselves for a crappy, entry level job on some random PS3 game.

When the identify of the judges for season 3 of The Tester were revealed, a part of me actually considered tuning in. Mostly because it was a bunch of folks who, you know, are actually part of the game industry instead of super models posing as such. Or am I simply confusing The Tester with that other reality show that IGN produced?

Anyhow, the list of names include David Jaffe (creator of God War, who I believe was a judge once before, not certain), Nolan North (the vocal star of Uncharted), Dylan Jobe (president of LightBox Interactive, behind Sony’s best homegrown hits Twisted Metal Black and War of the Monster, plus the upcoming Starhawk), Seth Killian (Capcom’s resident Street Fighter guru and all around great PR dude), Greg Miller (oversees PlayStation coverage for IGN), plus Todd Papy and John Garvin (part of Bend Studio, responsible for mostly Syphon Filter, which I never played but I hear good things about).

So with that all in mind, I was expecting a slightly more mature take on the proceedings, despite the latest cast being the usual gang of idiots. Well, I was clearly wrong…

Okay, let’s see…

- Live action Angry Birds-inspired antics? Check.
- Putting one’s head in a box that’s filled with giant bugs? Check.
- Dressing up as clowns for no explicable reason? Check.
- Rapid-fire, alternating shots of show’s female contestants stabbing each other on the back and sobbing? Check.

What'd you think of this?
