VIDEO: Details regarding the new ‘South Park’ game paints a very authentic experience
What’s a role-playing game without classes? And Obsidian’s South Park: The Game has them: the Fighter, the Thief, the Mage, the Cleric, and… the Jew.
The tidbit above was pointed out by Joystiq, who also mentions that it’s a cross between the Paladin and Monk types, and is a “high risk, high reward character; the closer he is to death, the more powerful his abilities become.” Yes, just like big JC himself!
The info was taken from this sit-down with lead designer Matt MacLean, courtesy of Game Informer. Another useful nugget of info is how it’ll resemble Paper Mario, not only in terms of aesthetics (if that game had been around back in the day, it would have been mentioned alongside PaRappa The Rapper as what the original South Park games for the N64 should have looked like, whose crummy 3d models were enough to permanently sour the notion of a decent South Park title in many gamers’ mind for years to come) but how it plays as well.
It’ll be a turn based affair, but the timing of one’s button presses in certain situations will also determine the power and effectiveness of the attack, along with the ability to block and counterattack. Regarding weaponry, it’s nice to see accouterments that dip into the show’s history, specifically the Good Times With Weapons episode (the first episode of the 8th season, where Butters gets that ninja star in his eye), which can also be upgraded and customized as the game goes on.
The interview does much to squash any fears about another crappy, mindless cash in. Not only does MacLean know what he’s talking about, but he also notes that Matt Stone and Trey Parker also know a LOT about video games. It’ll also emphasize what the show is all about, and that’s kids treating each other like complete garbage.
