VIDEO: Flexing your muscles to play ‘Super Mario 3′

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

Non-traditional, hands free controls is somewhat the rage in console gaming these days, but instead of waving your arms around like a goof, how about building them up and getting some muscles?

Via Dvice comes the home made USB Biofeedback Game Controller. Instead of push A or B to make Mario run and jump, simply flex either your forearms or biceps…

Looks awesome, though fairly exhausting to me. And it actually reminds me of… remember the U-Force? It was a forerunner of the Microsoft Kinect, but is the closest comparison of the thing above…

It’s hard to tell in the commercial, which also does a bit of lying (gee, the truth not being told in an ad for kids? I know), but many NES games were controlled in the same manner, via rather arcane and arbitrary arm movements and gestures.

Which often forced one to retain a fairly rigid position while playing. I recall, to play Super Mario Bros 2, I had to do movements similar to Daniel from the Karate Kid, as in “wax on, wax off.” Anyhow, here’s a clip of someone using it to play Mega Man 2. Notice the method to shoot. Especially the ladies out there…

What'd you think of this?
