VIDEO: Guy who gets rich by ripping off ‘Minecraft’ & then disses it is, surprise, a jerk
Matt Hawkins And some friendly (plus totally free) advice for aspiring game studios: if you need representation, hire a real PR specialist, not someon who’s claim to fame is being annoying on Xbox Live.
Via Reddit comes word that the creator of FortressCraft is “a bit of a douche”. First off, here’s the game in question, which is more or less a blatant rip-off of MineCraft…
Here’s another one, which is a bit longer, and includes sound-bytes from those involved. While I get their whole “look, this is for console gamers” attitude, their defensive and semi-indignant tone is a real turn off. And simply mentioning the competition so many times is just poor hype building…
Anyhow, the Reddit thread point towards this article from Eurogamer. To save some time, I’ll just cut to the chase and repost the most interesting bit, a quote from it’s creator…
“Minecraft has been squeezed out of its own market… It might do well on the name alone, but if you want sexy graphics and shaders and the creative aspect, you have FortressCraft. If you want to fight monsters and share stuff with your friends, you have Total Miner. Nobody will pay for Minecraft when they can pay $3.00 for Total Miner or FortressCraft.”
… Umm, what? I want to hear more about these supposedly “sexy” visuals. He also claims that the gameplay is nothing like Minecraft. lol. And the best part? His rip-off is a fairly successful, having generated a million dollars thus far via the Xbox Live Indie Channel. Oy vey.
Which makes his tone all the more aggravating. You know, Notch, the guy who created Minecraft, has openly admitted that he stole all his best ideas from another game called Infiniminer. But aside from being upfront, he doesn’t talk trash. Cuz that’s just low rent.
But to be honest, creative types are sometimes crazy and delusional. That’s why PR people exist, because they say the thing that should be said, and in a calm and professional tone. Or at least that’s what you’re supposed to do. Check out who they hired to be their official mouthpiece, someone who goes by DJ Keemstar…
Upon further investigation, his main claim to fame is being annoying during online Halo 3 matches…
… You know, I usually dig wacky sh*t-talkers on Xbox Live, but Jesus Christ us this guy obnoxious. And if you do a search, YouTube is filled with tons of clips starring this guy. And they’re all pretty much like this…
… You know what they say about dude constantly make gay jokes. Just saying. Also, derogatory jokes against homosexuals are just as lazy and insipid as jokes against overweight people. Go take some classes at UCB or something.
Oh, and the best comment in the Reddit thread, which may not be necessarily true is: “I know DJArcus [aka Adam Sawkins, creator of FortressCraft] in real life, hes actually a pretty chill dude, and he does joke about his game being a Minecraft rip-off within some circles of people.”
