VIDEO: ‘Halo Anniversary’ is almost here
In just a few weeks, we’ll be celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the beloved Halo franchise. Here’s one last look before it hits the store shelves.
Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary is notable for a number of reasons. First off, it’s a HD revamp of one of the most important games in the past ten years. I just realized that the other, Grand Theft Auto came 3 out around the same time… reasons number #34 & #35 why 2001 was such a big year in general. Any guesses as to what #1 was?
But aside from the obvious, it appears to be one of the few HD remakes in which the folks in charge actually put in a massive effort. As noted numerous times, I’m just annoyed with all these re-releases in which existing assets are presented in a higher resolution and that’s it. I’m still getting Peace Walker for the PS3 when it comes out, but will be cringing when Big Boss shows those big, block hands of his, which was at least acceptable on the PSP.
Whereas here, many things have been recreated from the ground up. Though I wish they had also gone the full monty and given Master Chief his same appearance as in part 3, but whatever. Gotta keep it old school whenever possible as well.
Though all that extra TLC is totally necessary since this is the first outing for the Halo’s brand new stewards, 343 Industries. They’ve actually been involved with the franchise for some time now; took over Halo Reach earlier this summer, and even contributed a few of the mutiplayer maps, made Halo Waypoint, and were the primary force behind Halo Legends, that collection of animated shorts, in the vein of the Animatrix.
Also, the real test is next year, when their first real deal offering hits: part 4. Anniversary should be considered their last chance to get the kinks out, since they’ll be heavily relying upon groundwork that Bungie established oh so many years ago. But again, it’s such revered material, that they no doubt are aware of all the scrutiny that the release will invariably receive. Barring any colossal screw-ups, I’m sure it’ll be fine for most casual players, but no doubt the hardcore will find some issue, one way or another. Guess we’ll all find out on the 15th!
