VIDEO: Hell freezes over as ads for PlayStation phone make actual sense

Earlier today, Sony (well Sony Ericsson to be exact) unveiled a new marketing campaign featuring Kristen Schaal for the new PlayStation Phone, officially dubbed the Xperia PLAY, and they actually make total sense.

Here’s another…

And another…

Listen, you don’t have to tell me that they’re hardly the funniest things ever. But anyone familiar with Sony’s marketing machine as it pertains to anything PlayStation related from the past ten years or so will all say the following: these new ads manage to tell you what the hell is being sold and make actual sense, period. Which honestly seemed like a complete impossibility up till this point.

Or at the very least, there’s always an over abundance of weird crap, so much so that any useful information is almost always overlooked and ignored thanks to all the smoke and mirrors. As a point of reference, remember Xperia PLAY’s debut commercial during the SuperBowl?

Again, at least we found out at the very end that it was about the PlayStation Phone, but what about this gem for the PlayStation 1?

The thing is, it’s actually by a favorite director of mine, Chris Cunningham, yet as a commercial it’s still a total failure. Why? Because it does do the job of tell me what I’m supposed to care about.

Things have been piss-poor on the print side as well. Here’s a Flickr pool that tells the entire story, but here’s some highlights…
