VIDEO: Highlights from this year’s EVO 2011

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

This past weekend in Vegas saw the best street fighters from across the globe all get together, to see whose the best in the virtual arenas of Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Mortal Kombat 9 (among others). And the winners are…

Even though you probably won’t understand what the hell is going on, all the flashing colors is purdy! Anyway, first off we have the grand final in the Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament, between “Viscant” over “PR Balrog”. Here’s part one (btw, it behing the finals, the winner is whoever nabs best three out of five matches)…

And here’s part two (the first minute and a half is particularly nuts, and what the crowd go NUTS)…

… One of the main reasons why that one maneuver with Phoenix is so impressive, for those who aren’t familiar with the game, is because she so ultra powerful/cheap. That clip is definitely going to be making the rounds for many years to come, without a doubt.

Next we have “Fuudo” versus “Latif” in Super SF4: AE. The big story here is how the one man that everyone figured would be in the finals, Daigo Umehara (whom everyone knows from this now immortal clip), wasn’t. He was knocked into 4th place, by Latif actually, who unfortunately ran out of gas by the end…

… Despite there finally being a great white hope for American players (actually, dude’s from Saudi Arabia), Japan came on top once more.

Speaking of, it was mostly Japanese games that were played, but you had one lone American title represented; this year marked the first time Mortal Kombat was included, and hopefully it’ll stick around! Here’s the final bout between “PerfectLegend” Vs “REO”, aka my personal favorite match of the entire shindig…

Though the truly big news of the weekend was Noah, the 8-year-old kid who competed in MvC3, and did quite well for himself!

What'd you think of this?
