VIDEO: How to turn your iPad into a real deal arcade cabinet, albeit a tiny one

Matt Hawkins Contributing Writer, Video Games

With the Space iNVADERCADE, now you too can enjoy the arcade classic the way God intended: with a joystick and shot button dammit, none of this touchscreen b.s.

Here’s a “wacky” commercial that helps drive the message home…

There’s only one problem: it’s Space Invaders. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the classics, that’s what I mostly play, and Space Invaders was a true groundbreaker. Without it, video games would be a very different animal these days.

Yet not everything stands the test of time, and it’s ultra limited (and quite frankly boring) gameplay can’t compare with offerings that came just a few years later, let alone today’s offerings. Hence why blowing an estimated $60 seems like waste, no matter how neat the overall package looks.

The real issue is how there’s only one button, which means the potential for other games to support it is quite limited. Hopefully, one might be able to play the VASTLY superior Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, aka one of the greatest modern remakes/tributes to a classic ever…

It’s absolute must have for any iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad user btw. The XBLA/PSN versions are also quite good. Anyhow, it should theoretically work, but I have no idea if the iNVADERCADE’s stick allows for full 8 way directional movement, and not just left and right.

In that case, there’s always the iCade, the original iPad arcade housing…

Problem is, whatever game needs to be able to support its interface, and while a good number do, it’s not as many as one would hope. Also, it’s even more expensive, at $100.

What'd you think of this?
