VIDEO: Low scores are the new high scores in gaming
Getting the high score in whatever game is for sissies. Sorry Billy Mitchell wannabes. But getting the lowest possible score in a game? Now, THAT is a real man’s game.
Seriously. Sticking close to zero (but still reaching the finish line, that’s the key part) is surprisingly tough task. And it’s not just because the games of today hands out points (and achievements, plus everything else) like candy; games of yesteryear are equally tough in this regard. Take a look at Super Mario World for example (the following is from Japan, btw, which should hardly be a shocker for most)…
As for all the text on screen, I’m willing to wager that it’s the player describing the extra set of rules he imposed onto himself, just to make it all that much more interesting. Which Kotaku explains, but basically, he also decided to play as Luigi, never pick up any coins, not pass a goal with more than one second remaining, plus more.
BTW, as with most wacky feats related to gaming, this is hardly new. People have been struggle to find the lowest possible score in the original Super Mario Bros. Apparently, after much trial and error among the dedicated (and flat out crazy), the golden number is 600 points…
