VIDEO: Once again, the best of the worst of E3 2011
Time for one last look at what makes game makers and journalists embarrassed to say that E3 represents the best their industry has to offer...
I figured that my last E3 recap would be, you know, the very last one. But this one final one for the road has pretty much every low-point in one convenient package that goes a long way in reminding us all that “man, this year’s show totally DID blow” plus “man, where the hell is video games headed anyway?”
Hey, another appearance by Mr. Caffeine, what a shock. I’m glad the creator of the video also thought that the idea of a Need For Speed that has action taking place outside of the car to be the stupidest thing on earth. And sorry that I failed to truly detail how utterly putrid that Kinect Star Wars game really was the first time around. Though I made sure to point out the idiots playing Kinect Sports football. And speaking off…
Did you notice a pattern? Is it any shock why no one’s looking forward to all the motion sensing nonsense that Microsoft in particular is pushing forward? Though what really kills it is how they’re being demoed in the most obnoxious manner possible. You know, that Disneyland game honestly looks pretty cool, but the overacting from the demo kids just leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth. Not enough to cost a sale (at least from me, since I was never going to purchase a copy anyway), when you’re trying to push a new concept in gaming, every little thing somewhat counts. And having douche-chill inducing theatrics doesn’t help anything in the end.
It’s not about feeling embarrassed about how you look when playing a game, cuz just sitting there with you jaw hung open, while playing Mortal Kombat, has to look just as silly as anyone spinning their arms around in Wii Play. It’s about feeling like you’re doing something that’s not part of something that PR folk specifically think is “totally awesome!!!” Us humans like to imitate, and if an assh*le is doing something, even if its something that seems like something we’d enjoy, we’d rather not follow such footsteps due to associations alone, period.
As silly a comparison as it might sound, having some PR drone go on and on and on about Skyward Sword would kill a certain degree of interest and desire for the game. And Nintendo knows this, from experience, i.e. Wii Music drum solo dude. My complaints extend beyond the Kinect demos btw. Hearing someone on stage the other person playing the game “good job”, regardless of input, is annoying for whatever reason. Jesus, just shut up and let the games speak for themselves!
