VIDEO: PSP games coming to your PS3 with a HD facelift

Just announced in Japan is the PlayStation Portable Remaster Series initiative, which breathes new life into assorted life portable titles, by giving them a new home and a new coat of paint.

Basically, certain PSP games will be re-released on the PS3 with all manner of upgrades, like new content and control options (I’m guessing it’ll be most force-feedback related), and best of all, enhanced sound and visuals.

Perhaps the most touted feature, even more so than the HD upgrade, is its multiplayer capabilities; players on both platforms can engage with each other on similar titles. Which is great and all… if you live in Japan, where folks actually still play with their PSPs. Can’t recall the last time I saw one on a subway train around these parts. We’re talking well over a year.

Hence why back east, the first title to be chosen is Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD, the wildly successful action RPG that’s basically a MMO-lite for the non-PC set. Here’s a trailer to show what to expect when it comes to transition…

To be honest, I’m a tad bit underwhelmed. It’s a straightforward update alright, with everything looking clearer, but not much else. Basically looks like a first gen PS3 title that was obviously a completed PS2 title immediately beforehand, till someone figured there would be more money by switching platforms. Oh well, I suppose it’s unrealistic to expect Capcom or whomever to completely re-do all the assets, because that would constitute an entirely new game!

Hey, make no mistake: if Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker comes out, I’m all over that.

What'd you think of this?
